California LPS Hospital Compliance Training: Is Your Staff Putting Your Facility at Risk?

Introducing the DLH Weekly LPS Compliance Challenge™ — Real Cases. Real Laws. Real Risk Prevention.

One patient. One involuntary psychiatric hold. One overlooked legal requirement. Could your hospital recognize a patient's rights violation before it becomes a liability?

Every day, California's LPS-designated psychiatric inpatient hospitals make decisions involving involuntary detention under Welfare and Institutions Code (WIC) §§ 5150, 5250, and 5585.

These decisions involve more than clinical judgment. They require an understanding of California mental health law, federal patient-rights protections, documentation requirements, and due process.

California Requires Ongoing LPS Staff Training

California's Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) implemented new LPS Facility Designation Interim Regulations in 2026.

Under Section 14 — Staff Orientation and Training, designated facilities must:

  • Provide at least 20 hours of continuing training annually

LPS compliance is not a one-time training event. It is an ongoing organizational responsibility.

Introducing:  DLH Weekly LPS Compliance Challenge™

An innovative, case-based training subscription designed for LPS-designated psychiatric inpatient hospitals.

One real-world case scenario.

Less than 20 minutes. Delivered directly to your staff's email inbox every week.

Each Weekly LPS Challenge presents a realistic situation involving California  LPS/ mental health law, HIPAA and privacy, telehealth, federal regulations, court decisions, or patients' rights (total: 46 weeks).

Employees review the scenario independently, on their own time, and answer one critical question:

"Is this a patient's rights violation?"

The challenge provides the applicable legal authority, explains the compliance issue, and identifies practical steps to prevent similar problems.

Sample Weekly LPS Challenge

A patient is detained under WIC § 5150. The hospital extends the detention under WIC § 5250, but the patient never had a consultation with their psychiatrist before the hold was extended. Is this a patient’s rights violation?

The answer connects the scenario to applicable law and explains the potential consequences for the patient , doctor, and hospital.

Why Hospital Directors and Risk Managers Should Invest
